Dig through your selvages and trim them to varying sizes in width. I cut mine from ½"–1½" in width.

Reduce your stitch length to 1.4–1.6. The small stitches will perforate your paper, allowing you to remove the paper easily later. Starting with your first square, begin sewing on your selvage strips. The first strip needs to be long enough to cover the length of the paper right next to the piece glued on the diagonal. With right sides together, align one edge of the selvage strip with the center strip. Sew down the edge with a scant ¼" seam, if possible. (Some of my selvages were so tiny that I had to sew right next to the edge of the fabrics.)
